Why Loud Music in Bars Increases Alcohol Consumption
People sitting around quietly nursing their drinks for hours are no good for profits. Talkers aren’t the best drinkers. At least that is the received wisdom in the industry. And this received wisdom turns out to be accurate according to field studies conducted in French bars by Professor Nicolas Guegen and colleagues.
I find it funny that they don’t mention the reason I always thought loud music at pubs turns into more drinking: If you’re determined to talk anyway, you have to talk louder. Talking louder means your throat dries out more often. That leads to drinking more to wet your whistle. That’s always been my experience, anyway.
