Even as thousands in San Francisco’s Castro district poured into the streets to dance, chant and wave flags after Barack Obama’s victory, the epicenter of the nation’s gay rights movement was awash in a mix of emotions. Not far from a plaza named for slain city supervisor and gay rights activist Harvey Milk, people looked anxiously at their cell phones for the latest figures on the controversial measure that had drawn national attention and millions of dollars in spending from both sides.

Castro celebrates Obama, fears a Prop. 8 win

That was me exactly, that was part of my night. Being in the Castro tonight was amazing. Watching the results on Prop 8 come in, on the other hand, make me want to throw up.
