Snickers Kiss (via DDCheats)
This is the Snickers ad from the Super Bowl in 2007 that people apparently got up in arms over for being homophobic. I’m finally seeing it just today.
Really? Seriously? I understand the knot in the stomach that forms when I see same-gender action used as a punchline, but here… I mean, the guys portrayed here are kind of chuckleheads all around, so aren’t we laughing at them, and therefore at their knee-jerk “whoa!” reaction of ending up in a kissing position, rather than sympathizing with them? Let’s talk about how stupid and rude it is to get in someone’s face and eat their candy bar. And then there’s the logic of: hey, we’re freaking out about having just kissed each other, how do we counteract that? Why don’t I show you my chest. That’ll reverse any homoeroticism!
I don’t get the feeling that anything in this commercial was presented as behavior to emulate.
Also, guys who are really afraid of anything even insinuating man-on-man action wouldn’t have initiated a Lady-and-the-Tramp-spaghetti moment, regardless of how good the candy bar is. And c’mon, when their lips touched, they totally held it.
I’m not saying we don’t need to speak out when our community gets used for a laugh, but at the same time, can we please stop assuming the American viewing public are a bunch of idiots?
